How to Use BW 921
- Melt slowly to the recommended pour temperature using a double boiler or wax melter.
- Add fragrance or essential oil up to 10% and stir gently for two minutes.
- Pour into pillar or freestanding molds and allow to set undisturbed.
- Top up (recap) any sink holes around the wick once the candle has partially cooled.
- Cure for 1–2 weeks before burn testing for best fragrance performance.
Wick Selection for Pillar Candles
Pillar candles need a wick that consumes the wax without collapsing the outer wall. Because BW 921 is a harder soy formulation, wicking runs slightly larger than a container soy of the same diameter. Use these as starting points for burn testing:
- 2" pillar: Start with a small wick and evaluate the melt pool depth after four hours.
- 3" pillar: Start with a medium wick, aiming for a melt pool that stops short of the outer wall.
- 4"+ pillar: Consider a large wick or a multi-wick layout to avoid tunnelling.
A properly wicked pillar keeps a thin unmelted outer shell so the candle holds its shape as it burns. Always burn test every wax, fragrance, dye, and diameter combination before production.
Troubleshooting BW 921
- Candle sticking in the mold: Let the wax cool fully before releasing. Chilling briefly can help, but avoid thermal shock.
- Frosting on the surface: Normal for natural soy. Pour slightly cooler and cool slowly in a draft-free space to reduce it.
- Sink holes around the wick: Expected with soy. Recap with a small top-up pour once the candle has partially set.
- Weak scent throw: Check that fragrance was added within the temperature window and allow a full cure before testing.
